Ironman70.3 Austin in Austin, TX
Race Type: Triathlon
Distance: 70.3 (Half-Ironman)
The event was well-supported. A few things were uncertain or changed from the race guide, so I recommend going to the race briefing (like shoes on pedals or not in T1). Small expo. Austin is a great city for an event.
It has two transition areas, but not a big deal really–just have to remember where your spot is in two instead of one T-area.
No biggie. Drove home a few hours after finishing.
Swim course changed in 2015 to CW. You get in and wait between starter buoys (which are not in waist high water as shared in race briefing, but with a wetsuit you can bob while you wait five minutes to start). Some chop on the way back in. Great peelers and a bit of a hike to T1–not too bad.
T1 was muddy due to rain the day before (even though it didn’t LOOK muddy). Use bags to get out to street–there is a garbage can by T1 exit.
Bike course is like typical Texas. Some crappy spots, chip seal, etc. You’re trying to be an IRONMAN70.3, suck it up and deal with it. I heard complaints–it didn’t bother me. Some hills in beginning and end (see suck it up comment). There was no 26.3 mile update on IM web site–make sure your stalkers know it may not update til you finish bike–no worries. Well marked. Never lost.
Run is three laps from Expo to park. A bit of a climb near Expo exit. You get plenty of crowd noise in the parking lot and finish indoors. Plenty of water and support (and toilets).
I went to this race with an ITB problem. Had to walk a lot in Mile 7-13, but I wasn’t alone.
Cool. 50s – 60s (by finish). Cloudy. Some wind.
Was the weather normal? Yes

Race morning you have to take a bus from T2 to T1. Very well run operation. I got there really early and was on first bus, but there were plenty. Spectators, too. No one can walk (in dark) to T1.
Also, there’s been complaints in the past about stickers in T1 and flats. I didn’t hear or see any this year, but keep aware about this.
Not sure if they will be there next year, but Red Bull was on run course giving out their drinks (yuck).
ABOUT THE SWAG
SWAG Rating: 3
About the SWAG:
It was a finisher’s visor. I didn’t realize this was going to be the swag and bought an Austin70.3 visor the day before at the Expo. Nice medal (these are commonplace these days). A cheapie backpack, too–not even sure where I put it. Nice sport tee for all racers.
Spectator Friendliness Rating: 5
Great spectator area on the run course in Expo parking lot. Plenty of places on bike course to cheer and move along to another spot. Many spectators on the shoreline to watch swim. I’m sure some fans went into the city (30 minute drive) for lunch while their racer was out on course. Easy in/out of parking lot on the west side.
