IRONMAN Boulder in Boulder, CO
Race Type: Triathlon
Distance: 140.6 (Ironman)
Entry Fee: $685
Perfect IRONMAN for a first-timer or an experienced Iron distance athlete. Great course and great crowd support. Logistics were good, race was very well organized.
Required to either drive and carry your bike (which I did) or use TBT or other similar service. Plus I went up several days early since its at 5280′ to try to acclimate a little before the race. So prepare to take a week off work plus associated expenses with staying out of town. Boulder had a ton of VRBO options close to the IRONMAN Village which were cheaper than the hotels.
Swim is in Boulder Reservoir, which is only marginally cleaner than Dallas area lakes. It periodically gets closed due to bacteria levels. It was NOT wetsuit legal this year, though about 2/3 of the field wore wetsuits anyway. Those of us who did not wear wetsuits got a 4 minute head start (rolling start) but quickly got overtaken which made it challenging at times.
The bike course is pretty fast. No real killer climbs, but 4 fairly challenging climbs on the course. If you train with power just ride within your zones on the climbs and you’ll be fine. Local coaches recommend taking 6% off your power to account for the altitude…this worked fine for me. Roads on the course were VERY smooth. Course is very pretty and plenty of support out there. No shade on the course so it can get hot on a sunny day. Air is very dry so take extra salt and hydrate more than you think you need to.
Run course is a double out/back on the Boulder Creek trail. Shaded and cooler thanks to the cold creek water. Excellent crowd support. Trail is relatively flat with a gradual climb from the furthest “out” section…sorta like running the Katy Trail from the AAC to SMU.
Sunny and warm. Started low 70s topped out in the low-90s. Clouds rolled in during the late afternoon and took the edge off the heat.
Was the weather normal? Yes

Was able to see friends 4-5 times on the run course. Great crowd support so even if you’re going up there solo there will be plenty of people cheering you on to the finish.
